Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern Merger Application
Union Pacific Corporation and Norfolk Southern Corporation have filed a joint application with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to combine the two companies, creating the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. The application, spanning nearly 7,000 pages, details how the end-to-end combination will enhance competition and deliver public benefits, supported by over 2,000 letters of support. Key benefits include faster, more efficient single-line service connecting coast to coast, the potential conversion of 2 million truckloads to rail annually, and the protection of all union jobs, with an expected creation of 900 net new union jobs. The merger aims to improve customer experience through a unified digital platform and streamlined pricing, while also investing an estimated $2.1 billion in incremental capital. The companies anticipate the transaction will be completed by early 2027, subject to STB review and approval.
